Purchase in Montana

Things To Know Before Buying A Home
If you are taking the next step in life and purchasing a home, chances are that you are feeling the pressure and the anxiety that goes along with this difficult decision. Those who buy homes ...
Big Sky Country aptly describes the state of Montana. Its wide open spaces are what you would expect from a state that made its living for so many centuries in sheep and cattle ranching. Cowboys can still be seen wherever you look, and the state still has a certain rustic, down-home feel to it almost everywhere you go.

But what if you're not exactly a rancher or cowboy-type of person? Why would you be interested in the state of Montana? While it may be called Big Sky Country, the state's motto is actually "Treasure State," and with good reason, as there is much more to learn and know about Montana than just ranching.

Dinosaur hunter's paradise.

Montana has been home to some of the most amazing dinosaur fossil discoveries ever made, and the state has celebrated this by showing off its treasures in a host of museums. Many even conduct field digs, allowing visitors to join them on paleontology trips around the state.

This makes Montana a favorite spot for kids of course, who often have a fascination with dinosaurs and everything about them. However, these paleontology field trips are much more than just recreation or so-called fishing trips. They are conducted by the Society
of Vertebrate Paleontology, and so are top of line when it comes to scientific accuracy and discovery. Anyone that has a real interest in science or ancient history would thoroughly enjoy joining one of these hunts for a true hands-on experience in the world of excavation. Or, if hands-on isn't your forte, enjoy the museums scattered across the state that display the treasures that other fossil hunters have found over the past few years, and really get a feel for what real dinosaurs were like when they ruled the world.

Outdoor lover's paradise.

To think that horseback riding and sheep shearing are the only two outdoor activities you'll find in Montana is very shortsighted. Whatever your pleasure in outdoor adventure - provided it doesn't include the ocean, of course - you're sure to find it in this colorful state.

What else do you enjoy doing in the great outdoors? Is it hiking, canoeing, rafting, rock climbing, or mountain biking? You're sure to find all of these activities conveniently located from wherever you live. Montana is also one of those beautiful states that gives you a full-range of seasons, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. There's no reason to be concerned if there will be snow enough for skiing, or if the summer will be hot enough for rafting.

And of course Montana has a wealth of national parks, including five entrances to Yellowstone, one of the most beautiful and varied parks in the world. If you're looking to hike a breathtaking mountain trail, or just unparalleled waterfalls and other natural elements, then Yellowstone is the place.

The economy.

Much of Montana's economy still hinges on ranching and cattle farming, however, tourism is also a huge industry as well. Montana has no sales tax, and household goods are exempt from property taxes. However, property taxes are assessed on livestock, farm machinery, heavy equipment, automobiles, trucks, and business equipment.

As more people realize the untouched beauty that is Montana, the building industry responds. New construction is on the rise in Montana, and new services and amenities are constantly coming to the state.

Luxury homes in Montana.

Not all residences in Montana are ranches and farms. There is a wealth of luxury homes available, from townhouses and condos to sprawling complexes.

Most residents of Montana appreciate the view of the surrounding mountains and landscape more than anything, so of course homes are going to be built to encompass this as much as possible. Floor-to-ceiling windows are not uncommon, even in townhouses and apartments. Most also feature walk-out areas so that you can truly appreciate the outdoors at any time of day.

Because Montana is a state with much natural beauty that's appreciated by its residents, luxury homes try to mimic this as much as possible. Most are built with cedar, marble, granite, and other natural elements throughout.

Additionally, because of the temperate weather, outdoor hot tubs are almost standard.

If you're interested in purchasing a luxury home in Montana, be prepared to pay for the space, the layout, the natural elements used to build it, and of course the view. It's not unusual to see some of the larger luxury homes in the big cities range in price from $5 million to over $30 million. And of course most come with tracts of land that are unmatched in any other city, so if you do change your mind one day and decide to give ranching a try, you're certainly all set up for it!

Montana has it all.

For some there is just no substitute for the bustling nightlife of places like Manhattan or Miami, but for those who appreciate some peace and quiet, and who are looking to relax in a state that offers everything by way out outdoor activity, then Montana has it all. Whatever your passion or pursuit, it is a wonderful spot to begin your life, raise your family, or consider for retirement. Homes are abundant, and the peaceful way of life is second to none. All in all, it's no wonder that Montana is called the "Treasure State."
